Book Description:

Dog-fearer extraordinaire, Barny Pedrotter is the world’s most unlikely Alpha. To him, mutts are the worst. Protective. Snappy. Love the taste of Barny’s pants. Proven when the millionth Pomeranian attacks him on the way to school, sparking childhood fears. The whole thing-him crying and leaping onto his best mate’s back, and trying to defend his pants with a newspaper-is caught on video and goes viral. Thanks to the local newspaper twisting the facts and branding him a dog beater, he loses his vacation position at LC Comics. Now he’s left with three days to find another job, or else flunk ninth grade.

Trouble is, the only available position is training Mr. Lucius’ cursed and disobedient hellhounds to track his missing father. No matter how scared Barny is, he’d rather face the fleabags than fail school. Except working with Mr. Lucius drags Barny into a millennia-old family feud, where Louis’ jealous, scheming sister, Gaybreeal, tries every little dirty trick to sabotage them and spark a war between Heaven and Earth. Barny must summon the Alpha within to command the hounds, or end up on their menu.

Heaven and Hound: Rise of the Alpha by LJ Clarkson is about a boy, Barny, who is absolutely fearful of dogs and with a twist of fate gets stuck at a job as a dog trainer....not what he wanted but the only thing available. Now Barny has not much of a choice as he gets dragged into a family war, a possible war between heaven and earth, within it all learning to become the Alpha and control two hell hounds.

Now you can only imagine who the hell hounds belong to, Mr. Lucius, yes Lucius. Then you have Mike, knows his way with a sword, Gaybreeal who creates utmost havoc. These characters are all in good fun with some biblical reference thrown in but its utmost a adventure and journey for protagonist Barney that leaves you wanting to know more. Know  More about Barny and his mother, his absent father, if his absent father has anything to do with his journey with these magical characters, with school, etc.

It's a fun tale wonderfully put together with a nice flow, and just enough description to keep the reader engaged. It's a tale that I can see being enjoyed by many for the sake in its entirety its a good story, if you pick up some references thrown within great, if not, it's one of those stories that is enjoyed either way and by many.

About The Author:

LJ 'fibber' Clarkson tells everyone she gave up her Environmental Engineering career to study a Masters Degree in Creative Writing and pursue her writing dreams. But that's not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Playing spider solitaire consumes 5% (bad, bad habit). Running Indicated, a promotional site for authors steals another 18.75%. In her remaining waking hours, she writes, laughs at her own jokes, reads and falls asleep whenever her boyfriend reels off geeky computer lingo (zzzzzz). If she were a Mastermind, she'd uninvent early mornings, grammar, broccoli, cleaning and her dog's fussy eating habits.

When She Smiled by Ritoban Chakrabarti, the story starts unfolding with the tale of Mrityunjay as he settles in his new school. His friendships, his crush on Akansha all introduce you to a world of teenage "love" and "loss".

Mrityunjay also known as Roy, makes the reader or for some may bring them back to their time when they were in high school, for teenagers relate or on some levels see similarities in their own environment or life's journeys up to this point. To the "love" or "puppy love" at a young age, the altercations, the studying, the pressure from ones peers, all those little things combined weaved into a story with a positive message at the end.

The story has a nice flow, easy to follow through from one scene to the next.  You get to read the story as if you were taking the journey with Roy or as/through him.  You see his life through different aspects from home, to school, with teachers, through the strong feelings he struggles with and for Akansha. Akansha, the girl, pretty, a little mouthy, dealing with her own issues, emotions.

Love, loss, forgiveness, never give up hope........

In the end we all face something we want to forget but will persevere and be just stronger for it.....

True Calling by Siobhan Davis is about a 17 year old Cadet Ariana Skye. Away from what used to be home "earth", Ariana's now new home, a planet nestled high above the earths atmosphere, 1200 miles to be exact, is a new home planet Novo. Planet Novo is made to look like, appear and seem like earth so the inhabitants would not expect anything. This as well as to help use their transition into plant Novo, as smoothly as possible.

Something strange is going on, and the government is leading up the rear of this strange parade. The chosen ones go to planet Novo which are selected from remaining citizens on earth under the age of 45, the rest are left as earth becomes a more a less inhabitable planet and less viable.

The transferees to Novo are all fixed with a device that is inserted into them, this is the governments way of keeping tabs on its citizens of its new planet. Their is more to this device than keeping track of the citizens of Novo and their whereabouts ...... It monitors their overall health and activities, their overall wellbeing. This advanced device is called Vito.

Protagonist, Ariana, catches on quite quickly that something isn't right, confused by the  government - sanctioned memory erase and why it's happening. What is the government trying to hide, why do they want the citizens to forget and have no memory?

As if wiping your memory and chipping you were like part of some heard, the government is also forcing all 17 year olds to participate or take apart of what they like to call "The Calling Pageant". It breaks down to arrange a male and a female, have them wed and help to start to populate the planet. As if they were like a heard and being passed through to do one thing.

For Aria beyond knowing none of this isn't right, being forced into marriage, the looming fact she would soon be a teenager mother unless she figures it all out what there up to. To top it off she cannot shake off a nightmare she is having or is it? Could it be a suppressed memory trying to resurface. All she knows whatever they are these nightmares, dreams, or suppressed memories, it's someone she may have left back at earth, not that she was given a choice, whoever it is. All she knows whom ever it is or who ever must be from earth, but can't remember them, but why? And who are they? Is she missing something very significant?

You will have to read  to find out more. If you like Sci-if dystopian novels, throw in a love triangle to heat things up. Two boys but which one has true intentions, and wants to do the best for Ariana?

A debut novel by Siobhan Davis, not only did accomplish a successful sci-if novel first time, but she made sure the readers were never bored. With full descriptions, twist and turns, government conspiracy. I only wonder what the second has in store. My only hope the pace picks up a little faster in the beginning of book two, book one started a little slow. There are other books yes you can say it's like this or that one, but if your a fan of any sci-if books, sci-fi dystopian novels there are many times you are reminded of another story. It takes a successful author to weave a planetary new tale, that is different enough from the rest, you enjoy it, that you can say it's different , it stands alone. You look forward to the second book? Want to know what happens next? Just have to wait and see?

For me The first book has caught my attention and I look forward to the second book myself. For me true calling is a Sci-Fi book I would recommended. It's a book you want to have in your sci-if collection. It's a book that leaves you excited for the sequel because, well hell, it has everything' you're looking for In a good compelling story.
